Operating Systems
Perhaps the most well-known open source software is the Linux operating system, which is available in many distributions. Linux is widely used in servers and embedded systems (e.g. NAS) and increasingly on desktops and even in mobile phones.
With the aid of virtualisation software, it is possible to run several operating systems (including proprietary ones such as Windows) simultaneously on one computer.
